CASPER, Wyo. — The Casper Housing Authority issued a warning Thursday, April 25 regarding a texting scam that references Section 8 housing vouchers.
“Did you receive a text from Section 8?” the warning reads. “CHA and/or Section 8 will NOT send any information to you by text. The following text scam is going around: ‘Section 8 Status Error in Processing for (your name).'”
Casper Housing Authority says that they will not contact people regarding Section 8 housing via text.
“Do not be alarmed! This is a phone scam and is not affiliated with CHA or HUD in any way. If CHA needs to contact you, we will call or send a letter.”
The Section 8 federally funded housing program is intended to help low-income families pay rent, according to Affordable Housing Online.
“Qualified families or individuals accepted into the Housing Choice Voucher program receive a voucher that pays a portion of their monthly rent,” the website explains. “The tenant is responsible for paying 30 percent of their monthly adjusted income for rent.”
“This amount can be adjusted through deductions including child care expenses and medical expenses, among others. The voucher covers the difference.”
The Casper Housing Authority said that people with questions regarding the texting scam can contact their office at 307-266-1388.
