CPD: Make plans for Cinco De Mayo celebrations

The Casper Police Department is reminding the community to make a plan before participating in Cinco De Mayo festivities.

“Before you start drinking, make a plan for the rest of your day,” said Rebekah Ladd, Public Information Officer for the Casper Police Department. “If you’re going out to celebrate, make a plan before you leave about how you are going to get home. If you stay home, take a minute to make sure you have everything you need before you start to drink so that you can avoid the need to drive somewhere later in the day.”

Police say that Casper offers a number of low-cost transportation options such as Uber, Lyft and Taxis. Coordinating with a friend who will be sober is an option, too.

If you are intoxicated at a restaurant or bar without a plan, please ask your bartender about the ‘Safe Ride’ program which may be able to offer you a free ride home.

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, one third of all vehicle fatalities on Cinco De Mayo are drunk driving related.

NHTSA also reports that over a five-year period, 270 people died in drunk driving related crashes.
Don’t be a statistic, make a plan.

“Last year, CPD reported one drunk driving related incident,” said Robert Grant, Crime Analyst with the Casper Police Department. “Let’s get to zero this year.”

If you suspect someone is drunk driving, please call 911.
