With food truck fire code changes, City of Casper says public can access international codes

CASPER, Wyo. — The public’s ability to access some international codes such as the International Fire Code has been a topic of recent Casper City Council discussion.

During their discussions of new fire code oversight of mobile food vendors, questions came up as to whether the public had free and easy access to the international codes that apply.

Vice Mayor Shawn Johnson said that he thought it was important that citizens be able to review these rules.

Councilman Ken Bates has said that he thinks the City should not rely on any international codes.

During the Council’s Tuesday, June 12 work session, Johnson said that if the codes are available, the City should provide information about how the public can access them.

On Wednesday, the City’s website released information about the means of accessing these codes.

The 2018 International Building Code and the 2018 International Residential Code are available online.

Copies of other codes are available at the Natrona County Public Library. The International Fire Code is one example, in addition to the International Building, Plumbing, Fuel Gas, Mechanical, Existing Building and Residential Codes.

Sections of the codes can also be requested from the City of Casper Community Development Department. However, the City says these can only be provided if they “are not too lengthy which might violate the copyright declaration paragraph in the code book.”

The Municipal Code is available online.

The Community Development Department has handouts available for “Home Owner” projects which include the following:

  • 1. Single Family Additions
  • 2. Basement finish
  • 3. Patio Covers/ Car ports
  • 4. One story detached garage
  • 5. Reroofing
  • 6. Enclosing existing patio covers
  • 7. Ramps
  • 8. Smoke Alarms
  • 9. Handrails/stairs
  • 10. Monolithic slabs
  • 11. Mobile Home setup

The City’s inspection team can also answer code questions at their City Hall office from 8-9 am, 1-1:45 pm or 4-5 pm Monday through Friday. They can also be reached at (307) 235-8264.
