CASPER, Wyo. — The Stink Water Fire is burning northeast of the larger Fishhawk Fire east of Yellowstone National Park.

The Stink Water Fire was reported on the afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 3 in the Sulpher Creek area of Sunlight Basin in the Absaroka Range.

The fire was initially estimated at 50 acres.

“A Type 1 helicopter was used from neighboring Fishhawk Fire to drop water on the fire and smokejumpers were inserted at the fire,” an incident report on Inciweb states. “Once on scene, the fire was determined to be approximately 25 acres in size.”

It is a “full suppression fire,” which a U.S. Forest Service official explained means that fire crews will actively work to contain the fire.

A hotshot crew will be brought in the help with those efforts.

The fire is burning in an area of “heavy dead and downed timber,” the report adds.

No area closures have been listed on Inciweb.
