CASPER, Wyo. — The Casper City Council appoints a new mayor from among their ranks at the start of each year.

As they prepare to do so, the city council is considering increasing the stipend the mayor is able to receive.

City council members receive $150 per meeting and the mayor receives $200 per meeting. The State of Wyoming allows up to $300 per meeting be paid to a municipality’s mayor.

“When you do this job of being the mayor, sometimes there’s a little more to it than you expect,” Mayor Charlie Powell said.

He pointed out that the mayor is asked to attend a lot of community gatherings and deliver proclamations.

“I just came from one about an hour ago,” Powell said. “From my perspective, it is a critical part of serving as mayor. It really matters to people if the mayor shows up at something.”

But that can add up in terms of gas costs and time away from work.

Former mayor and current Councilman Ray Pacheco agreed.

“It was taxing on my job because I’m full time over at the college,” Pacheco said. “It’s not as easy as you would think.”

Powell suggested upping the mayor’s stipend by $50, not for himself but for future mayors.

Pacheco also suggested the council consider increasing the mayor’s term to two years.

The city council discussed this during their Tuesday, Nov. 19 pre-meeting.
