Redevelopment around former Grant Elementary inching closer

(City of Casper)

CASPER, Wyo. — David Dewald is the owner of the former Grant Elementary School properties in Casper.

He’s asking the city council to re-zone some of the properties to allow redevelopment to occur there.

The city council approved the proposed zone changes to create the “Dewald Divide Addition” on first reading during their Tuesday, Nov. 19 meeting. They’ll need to do so on two further readings for the changes to become official.

The plan for the properties is to surround the former school with commercial shops and residential units.

The three lots of the property include the school building, the outdoor playground area and a large hill, according to the council’s Oct. 15 work packet.

The existing school building houses Miss Ashlee’s Childcare and Preschool and doesn’t require a zone change under the proposal. It will remain zoned as an Educational District.

The proposal asks that the playground be rezoned for General Business and the hill area be re-zoned for High-Density Residential.

The entire property is 6.33 acres.

Grant Elementary School held its last day of classes in 2017 and is located at the corner of Oakrest and East 15th Street.
