CASPER, Wyo — The Skunk Hollow Sneaker Chase (SHSC) trail run will take place Saturday morning, July 18, on the summer trail system of the Casper Mountain Nordic Center. Each loop of the course is 8-miles, and participants can sign up to do one or two laps.
The event began in 2013, and has grown from 116 participants to 208, including some Wisconsin, California and New Mexico, according to Mike Diesberg, the race director and founder of 307Running, LLC.
Diesberg said people shouldn’t be intimidated by the idea of an 8-mile “race.”

“We have called this a trail ‘run’ as opposed to a trail ‘race’ from the beginning in hopes that anyone [may] get out and enjoy our fantastic gem of a trail system on Casper Mountain,” Diesberg said in an email to Oil City News.
He did warn that trail running was a challenge: “Keep in mind, this is mountainous terrain at an approximate average of 7000 feet elevation and very few flat areas. It will take a toll on you!” Diesberg said. “Running 8 miles in town does not compare to 8 miles on the mountain.”
Diesberg said the ranks and camaraderie of the trail running community has been growing: “The support they have shown for this race has been tremendous, with many new runners catching the trail running bug,” he said. “Many runners seem to get their co-workers or friends to join them for a morning on the mountain and enjoying the trails.”
In 2018, the SHSC reversed the usual counter-clockwise circuit through the trails, and alternates directions every year. This will be the second Sneaker Chase to move in a clockwise direction.
Participants must register before the day of the race. Registration fees will increase on July 17. The price is $40 for the 8-mile and $50 for the 16-mile course. Sign-in is at 7:00 am.
