Following Walmart’s lead, retailers Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods announced on Monday they too will close on Thanksgiving Day this year.

Walmart made the announcement last week, citing a desire to give its employees the holiday off during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Monday, Target announced it too would close on what is traditionally a huge day for retail.

In a blog post online, Target told customers they can “relax and enjoy a long nap after you finish that last piece of Thanksgiving turkey.”

“This season, you can count on getting extra-big savings without the extra-long lines, with plenty of opportunities to score the best deals on the hottest items both before and after November 26,” the blog said.

Dick’s Sporting Goods announced their decision to close both their stores and distribution centers on Thanksgiving Day in on online release.

“The company also announced that store and distribution center teammates will continue to receive a 15 percent pay premium through the end of the year,” said the release. They will operate on standard business hours the following day.

For years, “Black Friday” after Thanksgiving has kicked off the Christmas shopping season. Over the past couple of decades, however, Black Friday has morphed into all-day shopping on Thanksgiving Day.
