CASPER, Wyo — Casper Fire-EMS received 100 smoke alarms as a donation from Comtronix Tuesday morning at Fire Station #1 in honor of Fire Prevention Week 2020, the agency said in a social media release.

Kitchen safety is the theme of Fire Prevention Week this year. According to Casper Fire-EMS, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries.

“We certainly see our share here in Casper,” the agency said.

Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen, the agency said, and added that towels, utensils, pot holders, cookbooks, and packaging should be kept well away from any source of heat.

Keeping cooking areas free of clutter is one of the basic foundations of fire prevention in the kitchen, Casper Fire-EMS said.

The 100 donated smoke alarms will be used by Casper Fire-EMS to assist those in need in the community, the release said.

Casper Fire-EMS also reminds the public to check their smoke alarms monthly and to replace batteries at least once a year on models without a sealed lithium unit.

“If you do not have smoke alarms please install some or have them installed,” Casper Fire-EMS said.
