CASPER, Wyo —  The Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) has chosen Casper as the location for their annual conference in 2022, Visit Casper announced Monday.

Visit Casper CEO Brook Kaufman said the event would bring 200 – 250 world-class writers and communicators from a broad spectrum of outdoor specialties to network and experience Casper as an outdoor destination.

“While the meetings and conventions industry has been hit hard, this conference brings hope and excitement for the return of in-person events,” Kaufman said.

The conference is slated for May 19 – 23, 2022 at the Ramkota Hotel and Conference Center

OWAA is an international nonprofit organization offering awards and fellowships to media professionals sharing the outdoor experience. Its annual conference “offers members the opportunity to improve professional skills through seminars, educational panels, group meetings, networking, field-testing opportunities and outdoor experiences. ”

Casper College writing instructor, outdoor journalist, and author Dave Zoby said there should be no shortage of local recreation outfitters and retailers willing to sponsor the showcase of the top-tier, blue ribbon North Platte and the rest that Wyoming has to offer in May.

Zoby has pitched for the conference previously, Zoby said the OWAA president, Christine Peterson, was likely convinced in August, when he and city officials gave her a tour of the Platte River Revival’s habitat and cleanup work by Jonah Bank. As a man in a boat drifted by, he just happened to haul up “a great big trophy rainbow,” Zoby said.

“She was there at the right moment.”

Petersen is a freelance writer who started at the Casper Star-Tribune at the age of 16, and was managing editor until 2018.
