CASPER, Wyo. — A Wyoming resident died in a fatal crash south of Gillette on Tuesday, October 19, according to a preliminary report by the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP).

According to the report, 25-year old Jesse Mcmanis died in the crash, which occurred around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday at mile post .015 on Swanson Road.

The roads were wet with rain and blowing snow was present, the report indicated.

The report found that at some point, the BMW left the roadway on the east side of Swanson Road, but no tire tracks were visible at the time that would show its direct route off the road. The BMW appeared to have slid broadside into the front end of a parked school bus. The BMW driver’s side took most of the impact, deploying the side curtain airbag.

The impact also pushed the school bus into the front end of another parked vehicle.

A witness saw a passenger exiting the vehicle but not see the crash. A search by Highway Patrol was unsuccessful, but the Gillette Police Department confirmed that the passenger was later found.

“There was no steam or smoke coming from the vehicle’s engine compartment that would indicate the crash may have occurred earlier than it was reported,” the report said.

Mcmanis was wearing a seatbelt, and speed is being investigated as a possible contributing factor, the WHP said.

Highway Patrol notes that the information in its preliminary report is subject to change without notice.
