Abortion rights rally being held in Casper Saturday amid nationwide protests

(Gregory Hirst)

CASPER, Wyo. — Pro-choice advocates will be demonstrating in Casper on Saturday, May 14 in the wake of a leaked Supreme Court opinion poised to overturn federal protections for abortion access. Similar rallies are planned across the nation Saturday.

The “Bans Off Our Bodies” event will begin with gatherings at street corners in three locations around town at 10 a.m.  A march from Veteran’s Park to The Healing Park on Conwell (across from the hospital) will begin at 1 p.m. The rally will begin at 2 p.m. at Healing Park, with Circle of Hope director Julie Burkhart among the featured speakers.

Supporters are encouraged to wear white. More information on times and locations is available here.

The fate of Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court will have profound and immediate consequences in Casper and in Wyoming. If it were overturned, Wyoming’s “trigger law” passed earlier this year would ban abortion in most cases. There are exceptions in cases of incest, rape, or when the woman would be at risk of serious, irreversible harm or death by carrying on the pregnancy. “Psychological or emotional conditions” are not included in the exception.

Circle of Hope is also preparing to open its Casper clinic in June, and would offer a range of reproductive health care services, including abortion. It would be the only such clinic in the state.

The moral positions posited by both sides of the issue were explored in this coverage of a pro-choice rally in Casper last fall.
