CASPER, Wyo. — Swaths of interstates and major highways are closed early Friday due to high winds and blowing and drifting snow.
According to WYDOT, Interstate 80 from Cheyenne to Rock Springs is closed as of 5 a.m. on Friday, and Interstate 25 is mostly closed between Cheyenne and Glendo. No unnecessary travel and black ice warnings are in place between Casper and Midwest.
Interstate 90 between Sheridan and Buffalo is also closed as of early Friday.
Additional closures include US 30 between Rock Springs and Cheyenne, US 87 between Cheyenne and Glendo, US 287 between Laramie and Lander, and WY 220 between Muddy Gap and Casper.
A winter storm approaching Wyoming could dump up to 2 feet of snow on Casper Mountain over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Riverton, which has upgraded the event from a winter storm watch to a winter storm warning.
Temperatures will be significantly colder than normal, dipping to 3 degrees by Saturday night and minus 10 degrees overnight Sunday, which will see a daytime high of only 4 degrees, the NWS in Riverton said. Some areas of the state will see temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees, the weather service added.
“This will be a long-duration event, with impacts to travel for several days,” the NWS in Riverton said.
