CASPER, Wyo. — Over the years, the Green Acres Corn Maze has become one of the area’s most beloved seasonal attractions. Now in its 12th year, this weekend marks the maze’s return.
Each year, the corn maze features a theme, and prior themes have included superheroes, Charlie Brown and the Super Mario video game franchise. This year, the maze’s theme is country music icon Reba McEntire.
“I love how everything came out,” Green Acres co-founder Kim Syverts said with a wide smile. “It’s a beautiful design and it looks great.”
The finished maze represents countless hours of meticulous work: Maze co-founder Steve Syvertz said work on it began back in May.
“Everything you see, we did by hand,” he said. “You’ve got to grow [the corn], of course, and then cut where the design goes.”
Families are able to enjoy far more than just a maze, though. Pig racing, a petting farm, miniature train rides, basketball, gemstone mining and a jumping pillow are just some of the many other activities and games at the farm. New to the festivities this year is paintball.
“It’s good, wholesome agri-entertainment,” Steve Syverts said.
The maze’s routes lie in the Syverts family’s involvement in the Future Farmers of America program, Kim Syverts said.
“Our daughter was in FFA, and she was looking for a project,” she said. “My husband is from Riverton, where they have a small corn maze. So my husband and her came up with the idea to do a maze here.”
Since then, the maze has only grown in scope and popularity.
“I’m still very proud of that very first maze, especially since it was our first time and we didn’t really know what we were getting into at the time,” Kim Syverts said with a chuckle.
The maze will be open until Oct. 31, running on weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., though Steve Syverts said they would open the maze on weekdays for school field trips, parties and other appointments.
Admission is $12 for ages 12 and up and $10 for ages 4–11. Children 3 and younger get in for free.
The maze at the Green Acres farm is located west of Casper off of Highway 20-26, about three miles past the Casper-Natrona County International Airport. Specific directions to the farm are available on its Facebook page.
