CASPER, Wyo. — A grizzly bear attacked a person on the night of Monday, July 27, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. The attack occurred at an abandoned farm site southeast of Choteau, Montana.
The individual had been searching for a bear “after hearing a report of tracks in the area,” Montana FWP said. The person is in stable condition after sustaining injuries to the arm, hand and back.
“The bear was believed to be a sub-adult and had been in an old barn eating discarded grain,” the department added.
Montana FWP biologists and wardens went to the scene of the attack on Monday night in an effort to locate and trap the bear, but overnight attempts were unsuccessful. Montana FWP returned on Tuesday morning with helicopter assistance from Two Bear Air to continue searching for the bear.
“However, no bears were located, which isn’t surprising as bears will often flee an area after an encounter such as this,” Montana FWP said. “FWP will continue monitoring the situation and trapping efforts.”
“Landowners who see bears or bear sign should notify FWP immediately. All people in grizzly bear country should carry bear spray and avoid surprising grizzly bears at close range.”
