CASPER, Wyo. – Wyoming’s only opera company wants to bring a bit of Viennese tradition to Casper this New Year’s Eve.
Members of Opera Wyoming have been putting the final touches on a production of Johann Strauss’ ‘Die Fledermous’ with full dress rehearsals over the weekend.
‘Die Fledermous’ is an operetta, light in both its comedic mood and music.

According to Opera Wyoming co-founder Daniel Quintana, the production includes a live small orchestra made up of musicians from Casper as well as other parts of the state.
“We’re doing ‘Die Fledermouse,’ the title is in German but we’re doing it entirely in English,” said Quintana. The company added what he describes as “Casper and Wyoming-centric” references to the work.
“It’s a romantic comedy, lots of laughs and nothing entirely serious,” he said, “it should be appealing to all people.”
The New Year’s Eve operetta performance starts at 7:30 p.m., with the Masquerade Ball starting afterwards at 9:30 p.m.
“Those are two separate ticketed events,” said Quintana, each costing $50 per person. People can choose to buy tickets for either one or both.
The afterparty features other family-friendly entertainment, including Keyhole Cuties and The Cory McDaniel Duo. Children ages 14 and up are welcome.
“Every 20 minutes until Midnight, something will be going on. It’s kind of akin to what they do in Vienna,” he said. “If you just walk around there in the square, they have musicians all over the place, so we’re putting a Casper spin on the Viennese tradition.”
The performance and ball take place at The Lyric downtown, which is now the opera company’s permanent home.
The production minus the New Year’s ball will be repeated on January 3rd at 7:30 p.m. and again on January 5th at 2 p.m. all at The Lyric.
Opera Wyoming’s production of ‘Die Fledermaus’ starts at 7:30 p.m. at The Lyric. The New Year’s Eve Masquerade Ball starts at 9:30 p.m. following the operetta. Each event is $50 per person. Tickets can be purchased at Opera Wyoming’s website, or by calling (307) 333-1688.
