BACKSTORY: Northbound From Center Street

A view looking north on Center Street, now, compared to a vintage post card from the early 1960s.

A comparison for this week’s Backstory, showing us a view looking north on Center Street, now, compared to a vintage post card from the early 1960s.  To stroll Center street in 2017, you could find yourself grabbing some sushi, seeing a movie, buying a record, or getting a tattoo; among other businesses and activities.

In the postcard, you might have stopped into the Saddle Rock Cafe for a bite, or picked up a prescription at Walgreens, or caught a show at the Rex Theater.

Also visible is the very large sign for the Henning Hotel. An earlier photo of the Henning was last week’s Backstory feature.

A vintage early-60s postcard shows a bustling Center St. in downtown Casper. The back of the card reads:
“A city of over 40,000 located on the high plateau country of central Wyoming is the center of a vast trading area for mining, oil, ranching and a fast growing hunting and recreational traffic.”
