The City of Casper has named a director for the new Parks and Recreation department, according to a written statement sent to media on Tuesday.

Casper’s City Manager, J. Carter Napier, announced that Tim Cortez will be the new director of the department. Cortez has been with the City of Casper for 18 years, most recently in the fire department serving as a division chief.

“Mr. Cortez brings skills to this position that will complement the strong leadership team that already exists,” stated Napier. In addition to his associate’s degree in fire science, Cortez holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in business administration.

“I am looking forward to this new challenge and serving Casper in this new capacity,” commented Cortez. The Parks and Recreation Department is a new department at the City created from the public services department’s parks division, and the former leisure services department.

“By reallocating internal talent to this area of the City, we are able to make this a budget-neutral change,” continued Napier.

Cortez is scheduled to begin his new job on January 22.
