CASPER, Wyo. – First responders and volunteers gathered at Verda James Elementary School on Wednesday morning to help raise awareness of road and crosswalk safety.
The annual event is organized by Safe Kids of Central Wyoming as a way of keeping children and drivers aware of each other during the school year.
According to Safe Kids, 40 children are hit by vehicles in the United States every day. The World Health Organization says pedestrian traffic injuries are the second-leading cause of death among children ages 5 to 14 worldwide.

On Wednesday, members of the Casper Police Department and Casper Fire-EMS took turns walking students across the street in front of Verda James, and added additional presence to remind motorist to stay aware and slow down at crosswalks. Volunteers from FedEx, partners in the program, handed out gifts to children who carefully used the crosswalk.
