CASPER, Wyo. — A rare “super blue moon” graced Casper’s night and early morning skies between Tuesday and Thursday.

The “supermoon” was at its brightest and largest on Wednesday night, when it approached its closest distance to Earth in orbit around the planet. According to Axios, the supermoon is some 14% larger than when it’s furthest away.

The “blue” refers to its rarity, not its color. A blue moon is described as a second full moon in the same calendar month.

NASA says that about 25% of all full moons are “supermoons,” while only 3% are blue moons.

The next Super Blue Moon won’t make its appearance until January 2037.
