CASPER, Wyo. — On Monday, Roosevelt High School’s Melanie Kelly, the 2022 Alpha Delta Kappa “Excellence in Education Award” recipient for Wyoming and the Northwest Region, was recognized during the Natrona County High School Board of Trustees meeting.

Kelly has been teaching for 35 years, including 32 years with NCSD, Roosevelt Principal James Catlin told the school board. She has also coached sports like basketball, volleyball and track for 15 years.

Kelly will receive a financial award to support her teaching for winning the regional award from Alpha Kappa Delta, which is an international organization with over 25,000 women educators in the United States, Canada, Jamaica, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

“Next July, she will travel to Kansas City to find out whether she’ll be the international award winner as well,” Catlin said.

Kelly was named the NCSD Teacher of the Year in 2009 and was state runner-up for Teacher of the Year. She works hard and is highly respected by many at Roosevelt, Catlin added.

“She’s the only person in our building who knows that at midnight on Sunday, we get a weird bell that happens there,” he said. “Everybody else is sleeping, but she is still getting ready for the week.

“It is such an honor to have somebody like this on your staff that is a true educational heroine. Teachers in our building just look up to her. Staff look up to her. You saw the number of hugs she gets when she walks into any place. She feeds her kids, she gives them snacks, she inspires them day in and day out.”
