CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Wyomingites have the chance to see a rare comet zoom across the sky for the next few weeks.
Comet ZTF, also known as the “Green Comet,” will be visible in the night sky tonight until Feb. 12.
The comet, which only passes the earth once every 50,000 years, will make its closest approach on Jan. 31. It will appear in the northeastern sky and move northwest over time.
The National Weather Service in Riverton, which posted about the comet this morning, advises astronomy enthusiasts to find a dark place and use telescopes or binoculars to view the fuzzy mass.
A new moon this weekend will allow for a darker night sky, and the weather service says to look for the comet near the Big Dipper.
