CASPER, Wyo. — This week, Casper Mountain will play host to the U.S. Biathlon National Championships, which will draw some of the sport’s top athletes to Natrona County. For things to go smoothly, though, event organizers say volunteers are needed.
For everything to go off without a hitch, the event requires roughly 50 volunteers per day. The event will take place March 22–26 at the biathlon facility on Casper Mountain, 1110 E. End Road.
“The need for volunteers is greatest on the firing range, where volunteers are needed to serve as scorers,” Casper Mountain Biathlon Club president Rob Rosser said. “That’s where all the excitement is.”
Not in the thick of competition, but still crucial to ensuring everything runs smoothly, is the need for volunteers to serve as parking attendants, Rosser added. Volunteers will also be needed at the finish line to handle the competitors’ rifles after their races.
“The biggest days are Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” Rosser said. “The races are Friday–Sunday.”
Scorers’ jobs will entail marking how many misses each competitor has.
“These are some of the top pros in the country, so it’s easier to keep track of how many they’ll miss than how many they’ll make,” Rosser said with a chuckle. “The pertinent information they’ll be tasked with recording is what firing point are they at, what’s their bib number and how many misses they have.”
Volunteers will be trained on Wednesday and Thursday, and Rosser asks everyone who wants to volunteer to sign up by the end of the day on Tuesday, though he added that volunteers will still be able to sign up on Wednesday. He noted that volunteers don’t need to volunteer for all five days and can help on as many or as few days as they’re willing and able to.
