CASPER, Wyo. — The Casper VA Clinic team is preparing to hold its first drive-thru influenza vaccine clinics of the season.

Enrolled veterans can receive a regular flu vaccine or, if they are 65 years of age or older, a high-dose vaccine. The first drive-thru clinic will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 at the parking lot outside of the Casper VA Clinic at 6000 E. 2nd St. Another drive-thru clinic will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, also outside of the Casper VA Clinic.

In order to receive a flu vaccine, veterans will need to bring their VA identification. Masks are also required and will be available from the Casper VA Clinic if veterans don’t bring their own, the Sheridan VA Public Affairs Office said in the announcement for the upcoming Casper clinics. Veterans should also consider wearing a shirt that allows easy access to the shoulder.

If people have a fever, cough or other COVID-19 symptoms, they should not attend the drive-thru clinics, the announcement added.

The announcement from the Sheridan VA Public Affairs Office also talked about why people should consider getting a flu vaccine at this time.

“It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies that protect against flu to develop in the body,” the announcement said. “The composition of flu vaccines has been updated. All flu vaccines will be designed to protect against four different flu viruses. By getting a flu shot, you will be less likely to spread flu to others. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans are hospitalized with the flu.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone six months or older should get a yearly flu shot. Flu can be serious among young children, older adults and those with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes. For answers to common questions and misunderstandings about the flu, go to the following CDC site: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/misconceptions.htm.”

Veterans with questions about the upcoming clinics in Casper are encouraged to call the Casper VA Clinic at 307-235-4143.

The Casper VA Clinic is one of eight outpatient clinics that are part of the Sheridan VA Medical Center’s health care system in Wyoming.
