CASPER, Wyo. — The Bureau of Land Management is offering a free, family-friendly Winter Adventure Day on Casper Mountain in April.

Pre-registration for equipment times and lessons is now open for the fifth annual event that’s meant to celebrate the end of the season with fun and safe activities, a BLM news release states. It’s scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15 at the Casper Mountain Biathlon Center at McMurry Mountain Park.

Educators from several local organizations will be there to help people try fat biking, Nordic skiing, electronic shooting, snowshoeing and other activities, the release states. Educational stations will be set up for participants to learn about winter safety, snow shelters, animal catching and other place-based learning activities, the release states.

Free hot chocolate will be available to help people warm up around the campfire.

“April is a great time to get out while the sun is shining and learn about snow sports, safety, and our natural environment with our Winter Adventure Day experts,” BLM Education Technician Stacey Moore said.

Moore said Winter Adventure Day started as a way to introduce winter activities to children and others who are interested but may be hesitant to try.

“Winter Adventure Day opens the door to the community by providing a variety of activities, as well as the gear and instruction to try them,” Moore said. “Especially now, there are so many people new to Casper and the Mountain West that may be unfamiliar with the fun that mountains and snow can provide.”

Every year, multiple sponsors collaborate to make this an event that is accessible and enjoyable to the whole community. Sponsors include the BLM National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, the Casper Mountain Biathlon Club, Wyoming State Parks, the Science Zone, the Central Wyoming Trails Alliance, the Casper Mountain Ski Patrol, the Nicolaysen Art Museum, and Casper Mountain Science Programs.

Participation is free, but equipment and lessons are limited to a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration is required to reserve equipment times and lessons. The National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, 1501 N. Poplar St., is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. MDT. Admission is free.
