CASPER, Wyo. — Casper College men’s head basketball coach Dan Russell will be leaving the Thunderbirds for a position a Montana State University assistant coach, according to a Thursday, May 2 CC news release.
“Men’s basketball head coach Dan Russell announced today that he’s accepted a position as an assistant coach at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana,” the release reads.
Russell had a record of 145-52 in his five seasons as head coach of the T-Birds, the release adds. He guided the Thunderbirds to a NJCAA Region IX championship title in his final season.

He spent ten years with the team, serving as an assistant coach before he stepped into the head coaching position, according to the release.
“’We are proud of the opportunity Dan has in front of him to coach at the university level,’” the release quotes CC Vice President of Student Services Kim Byrd. “’We’ll certainly miss him and wish him well in all his pursuits.’”
“’Certainly, we have established a solid tradition with basketball at Casper College and will be looking for a head coach that can continue that tradition.’”
The T-Birds basketball program began in 1945, the release adds. Casper College will immediately begin their search for a new head coach to step into Russell’s shoes.
