CASPER, Wyo. — The US Biathlon National Championships wrapped up today at Casper Mountain, as athletes were graced with clear skies as they took part in the third phase of the competition, the relay.
Relays, which involve multiple participants per team, include two shooting sessions — one prone and one standing — at each stage, with five targets at each range. For each target not covered at the end of shooting the biathlete must run a penalty lap of 150 metrers
On Friday, athletes took part in the sprint race, the shortest of the biathlon disciplines, with athletes reaching great speeds over the tight course. On Saturday, athletes took part in the pursuit race, which features four shooting sessions — two prone and two standing — with five shots each. Like the relay, the pursuit race also features penalty laps for misses.
