I-25 closed from Casper to Douglas to light, high-profile vehicles, closure north of Casper to Buffalo lifted

CASPER, Wyo. — A partial closure to light, high-profile vehicles due to high winds remains in place on Interstate 25 from Casper to Douglas Monday night, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT).

An earlier closure on I-25 from Casper to Buffalo has been lifted.

70-mph gusts are advised in the area until 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Two movie theaters are preparing to reopen in downtown Casper.

The America Luxury Movie Palace will reopen Thursday, May 26, and will be screening “Top Gun: Maverick,” according to WyoMovies partner Joe Houck.

“We have ‘Top Gun’ tickets up for sale,” he said Thursday.

After two years online, the Wyoming Outdoor Expo has returned to the Ford Wyoming Center.

Hundreds of students from area schools moved through the exhibitions on Thursday, getting the chance to safely learn the basics of firearms and fly fishing, and even getting to pilot canoes in a makeshift pond.

Habitat for Humanity, the Heart of Wyoming’s Harris Crossing is an entirely new subdivision on a plot of land that before 2017 was just a field of grass. It sits next to established neighborhoods in southern Casper just west of Beverly Street, and is a significant departure from previous projects. Three houses are currently under construction, and when they’re done, the total number of houses on the cul-de-sac will be 13.

Walking with Lyle Murtha is like putting on a pair of architect’s goggles — the lenses can spot features on old buildings worth salvaging, can give background information about terracotta on a restored fire station or tell the story behind a design team’s decision to turn an industrial cone crusher into a hand warmer at an outdoor ice rink.

Murtha, principal architect at Stateline No. 7, helped design David Street Station, ART 321, The Nolan, the Hotel Virginia Apartments, and the new Thyra Thomson State Office Building, to name some examples in downtown Casper and the Old Yellowstone District. With an eye for drawing new life out of old buildings, his projects include over 60 redevelopments around the region and more to come.

It will be the “bittersweet end of an era” when Sunrise Lanes closes for a major remodel May 9, but there will be much more than just bowling when it reopens this summer, said Sunrise Shopping Center owner Chuck Hawley.

“We’re turning the page to something that’s new and dynamic,” Hawley told Oil City on Saturday. As a managing partner for Cornerstone Real Estate, Hawley has been managing the bowling alley, restaurant, and liquor store for the last eight months.

Following a turnover in tenants and some deferred maintenance on the 60-year-old equipment, Hawley said it’s time for a complete overhaul.

The Casper Mountain Young Marines Youth Group and the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Casper are teaming up to honor the veterans who are buried in the Oregon Trails Veterans Cemetery in Casper, WY. Their goal is to lay 4,200 roses on the graves of the veterans buried in the cemetery.

The Casper Civic Chorale is rehearsing in person again as the COVID-19 pandemic subsides and members are feeling the rejuvenating energies of spring as they prepare for an upcoming “Songs of Hope” performance under a new director.

Casper Gymnastics Center is excited to be taking nine young athletes to compete this season for regionals. This will only be the third year they are attending regionals; last year they only took one competitor.

The compost starts out as a mixture of horse and cow manure, bedding materials and leftover hay and straw. Instead of hauling it to the landfill, the waste is taken to Kidder’s composting sites, where it’s is turned into something good.
