I-80 closed to all traffic in both directions from Cheyenne to Laramie following Thursday crashes; wind closures in effect further west

CASPER, Wyo. — Additional closures have taken effect on Interstate 80 following multiple reported crashes earlier Thursday.

I-80 is closed in both directions to all traffic between Cheyenne and Laramie as of 12:50 p.m. Thursday, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation. WYDOT on Thursday morning said there were multiple reports of crashes that were causing backup along I-80. The closures initially impacted only westbound travel from Cheyenne to Laramie.

I-80 also has wind closures in effect from Laramie to Walcott Junction near Elk Mountain. That stretch is closed to light, high-profile vehicles. WYDOT sensors show gusts are reaching near 60 mph in the Elk Mountain area and gusts up to 70 mph are expected on Thursday afternoon into early Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.
