Yellowstone: Beartooth Highway to close Friday morning ahead of ‘heavy’ weekend snow

CASPER, Wyo. — A section of the Beartooth Highway, also known as U.S. Highway 212, will close at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, according to Yellowstone National Park.

“This is a temporary closure due to expected winter weather, heavy snow and hazardous driving conditions through the weekend,” Yellowstone said on Thursday. “The highway will reopen as conditions allow.”

The highway will be closed between the Long Lake barricade near the Top of the World store and the Wyoming–Montana state line.

The forecast for the area calls for an 80% chance of snow on Friday with 1–2 inches possible, according to the National Weather Service in Riverton. An 80% chance continues on Friday night, with less than an inch of snow expected.

On Saturday, there is a 100% chance of snow with about an inch possible. On Saturday night, the chance drops to 80%. Snow is expected to continue on Sunday with an 80% chance, dropping to a 50% chance overnight. A 50% chance continues on Monday, dropping to 20% on Monday night, according to the NWS in Riverton.

The area could continue to see snow on Tuesday before sunny conditions Wednesday, followed by a chance of snow again on Thursday.
