Alcohol use may have contributed to fatal motorcycle crash south of Afton

CASPER, Wyo. — Alcohol use is being investigated as a possible contributing factor in a fatal motorcycle crash south of Afton, according to a release Monday by the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Troopers were notified of the incident at milepost 72 on US 89 around 5:58 p.m. Sunday, July 31.

The driver was headed south on a 2018 Harley-Davidson when he failed to negotiate a curve to the left and collided with a guardrail off the right side of the roadway. The collision caused him to be thrown from the motorcycle and down a steep embankment, Highway Patrol said.

The driver was not wearing a helmet and succumbed to injuries at the crash scene, Highway Patrol said.

The driver has been identified as 63-year-old Walter A. Castillo of Montpelier, Idaho.

There have been 56 fatalities on Wyoming’s roadways to date in 2022 compared to 60 in 2021, 64 in 2020, and 96 in 2019.
