Moorcroft police add details, seek info on Shayna Ritthaler case

The Moorcroft Police Department is looking for help in the case of Shayna Ritthaler, who went missing on October 3 and who was found dead in Sturgis, South Dakota, on October 7.

Police issued a detailed a timeline of known events in a news release for help gaining “additional evidence and possible other unknown witnesses and or suspects,” according to a post on their Facebook page today.

According to police, on October 3 at around 1:50 p.m., the Moorcroft Police were contacted by Moorcroft High School reporting Shayna Ritthaler, 16, missing after open lunch. Fellow students reported seeing the girl walking towards the Coffee Cup.

Surveillance video showed Shayna walking and apparently texting towards the coffee shop.

At 12:36 p.m. video footage shows a gray two-door 1994 Jeep Cherokee arriving at the Coffee Cup. Shayna entered the vehicle on the passenger side, and it drove in the direction of Highway 16.

After contacting Shayna’s guardians and searching the area, police determined Shayna a runaway.

Police say her phone was deactivated at 12:36 when its last location was in Moorcroft. Her social media accounts had become inactive, and she had provided no updates to family or friends.

On October 5, Moorcroft officers discovered the unknown “person of interest” suspected of being the driver of the Jeep to be in the Lead/Deadwood area of South Dakota. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office were requested to assist in locating the unknown driver and Shayna.

On October 6, the Moorcroft Police Department was notified by Deadwood Police Department that they’d located the suspected vehicle in the Sturgis area. A male was contacted in Deadwood, but Shayna was not present.

On October 7, the Meade County Sheriff’s Office notified Moorcroft police that a deceased female believed to be Shayna had been found.

According to news reports, a South Dakota 17-year-old male is being charged as an adult with second-degree murder after police say he shot Shayna during an argument. The Rapid City Journal has identified the teen as Michael Gavin Campbell.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Moorcroft Police are asking for any information pertaining to the case, including the whereabouts or activities of the suspect vehicle, along with that of Shayna in the South Dakota area on October 3 and 4.
