The suspect made his initial appearance before Judge Michael Patchen on July, where he was formally charged and a bond amount was set at $250,000. The suspect, identified in open court as 50-year-old Brian Cartwright, declined to comment on his bond during the hearing.
The charges in the case, as defined by Wyoming statute, reference one victim who is indicated to be between the ages of thirteen and fifteen.
According to documents released by the Natrona County Circuit Court, the victim told police that the suspect had raped them in a private residence in Casper in September 2020. The victim told investigators that the suspect had ripped their clothes off and “aggressively” sexually assaulted the victim.
Investigators also spoke with another party in the home who said they witnessed the suspect take the victim into a bedroom of the private home during the alleged incident. The person indicated to investigators that they believed Cartwright had taken the victim into the bedroom to have sex with them. The witness also told police that they feared that Cartwright would harm them, and said that he made threatening statements to them.
The affidavit goes on to say that during questioning the suspect told officers that he had sex with the accuser and claimed that the victim had been “coming onto” him. He further told interviewers that he knew the victim to be under eighteen years of age.
Court papers indicate that other law enforcement agencies are investigating Cartwright, and that those investigations remain open.
The suspect is awaiting a preliminary hearing, to determine if charges in the case will be bound over to Natrona County District Court.
