Gillette home invasion suspect pronounced dead on the scene Sunday

The Casper Police Department is asking for the public's help with a recent string of burglaries.

According to a press release from the city of Gillette, a home invasion suspect was pronounced dead on the scene early Sunday morning after an altercation with the Gillette Police Department.

“At 7:17 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16, Gillette Police Department received a call from a citizen in the 500 block of Church Avenue requesting assistance to remove a subject from their home. The caller indicated that the subject had made threats of violence to the occupants of the residence and refused to leave. When officers arrived at the residence, they made contact with the suspect, who was armed with a large-edged weapon. The suspect refused multiple requests to drop the weapon,” the release stated.

“Officers deployed two forms of less-lethal options and the armed suspect retreated further into the residence. The officers continued to attempt to disarm the suspect through less lethal means. The suspect then charged the officers, swinging the weapon at them. Both officers discharged their duty weapons, striking the suspect. Lifesaving measures were initiated; the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. One of the officers was treated for minor injuries,” according to the release.

The City of Gillette indicated that there will be no further information released on the incident until the investigation by the Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is complete.

This is the second time in recent months that officers in Gillette have discharged their service weapon responding to an incident, the last occurring on Dec. 15, 2021 when a civilian’s canine was shot and injured by a peace officer after it allegedly attacked a service K9.
