CASPER, Wyo. — A defendant heard felony charges in Natrona County Circuit Court on Monday after Casper police say they recovered almost 10 pounds of packaged marijuana from his residence last weekend.

Rance Lehnen, 67, is charged with possession of marijuana in a felony weight and possession with intent to distribute. The charges together carry a penalty of up to 15 years in prison. Lehnen is also charged with cultivation of marijuana, a misdemeanor, after police say they recovered five mature cannabis plants from another property owned by Lehnen.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven or pleading guilty.

Police responded to the 900 block of North Kimball Street around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 to a report of an odor of marijuana in the area, according to an affidavit.

Officers walking around the property spotted 6-foot-tall cannabis plants in the backyard of the residence, the report said. Police then obtained a search warrant for the home, which was vacant and padlocked. Police identified the five mature plants potted in the backyard, and learned from neighbors that Lehnen was the only person to access the home.

Police learned the location of Lehnen’s primary residence on the 100 block of North Lennox and made contact with him there. After securing and executing another warrant, police say they located eight large bags with about a pound each of suspected marijuana inside. They also found about 27 ounces (1.7 pounds) of suspected marijuana in baggies, along with other smaller quantities of marijuana in other containers, the affidavit said.

The state’s attorney noted Monday that Lehnen has two prior felony convictions for possession of a controlled substance and was on probation at the time of the new charges.

Bond was set at $30,000 cash or surety.
