The performance was intended to be the debut for the WSO’s new music director Christopher Dragon. However, a delay in the Australian’s visa paperwork forced the organization to find a last-minute replacement.
They found it in Scott O’Neil, a resident conductor at the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in Denver.
Shortly before Saturday night’s performance, principal cellist Christine Hutchings said the orchestra loved working with O’Neil, who she described as having a “very zen-like” approach to making music.
Dragon’s official debut with the WSO will take place on its first programmed performance of the 2019-2020 season in September.
