CASPER, Wyo. — With the Casper Housing Authority looking to transform the former North Casper Elementary School, the process to re-zone the property is now underway.
The Casper City Council passed on first reading the zoning changes requested during their Tuesday, Aug. 8 meeting.
They’ll need to pass the changes on two further readings to become official.

The Casper Housing Authority purchased the former North Casper Elementary School building and property from the Natrona County School District for $150,000.
Now, the CHA is planning to convert the former school into facility with several purposes.
“We’ll be landscaping the entire property,” Kim Summerall-Wright, CHA director told the Council.
She said the housing authority are hoping to put in a daycare, office space and a maintenance facility for all of their Casper public housing units. In addition, a “Connections for Success” training center, HUD/Vash offices, an additional parking lot, a computer lab, a playground and more would be put in.
“We believe that North Casper is a vibrant community,” Summerall-Wright said, adding that the area does need more services such as grocery stores.
The former school building is currently zoned as ED (Educational District). The housing authority is requesting that it be re-zoned as C-2 (General Business) so that their re-purposing efforts can move forward.
The former school is located at 1014 Glenarm Street in Casper. The structures on the property have been out of use since 2015, according to the city.
