Utah Sen. Mike Lee says the U.S. should consider declaring Mexican drug cartels terrorist organizations after a savage attack left three mothers and six children dead this week.
According to the Deseret News, Sen. Lee, a Republican, said Mexico is at risk of becoming a “failed state” and “we have not seen enough action toward addressing the threat that it presents not only to Mexican people but to the American people.”
Lee made the comments during a local radio talk show on Wednesday morning. The victims of the attack in northern Mexico, which included people with dual citizenship living in a Mexican enclave of fundamentalist Mormons, has resonated across the Mormon community.

“Sometimes it takes something like this to jolt us into a full awareness of the fact that this is not a problem that is going to remain isolated and south of our border,” he said. “This was nothing short of a savage act of cruelty.”
Sen. Lee said he has talked to both President Trump and Vice President Pence since the attack, and he said they are taking his concerns seriously.
One person has been arrested in connection with the attack.
