Sheridan man found dead by search and rescue team in Johnson County

CASPER, Wyo. — The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said on Thursday, April 9 that a missing Sheridan man was found deceased on Wednesday.

Sergei Mindham, 28, had been reported missing on March 30. His body was located by search and rescue teams near Billy Creek Access Road in the Big Horn Mountains.

“While conducting a ground search of the area, Sergei Mindham was found deceased a short distance from his vehicle,” the JCSO release states.

On March 30th, 2020, Johnson County law enforcement was contacted in reference a missing person from Sheridan County, Wyoming. Sheridan area law enforcement issued an “Attempt to Locate” on missing person Sergei MINDHAM, (28 yoa male), known to be operating a Hyundai Elantra bearing Wyoming registration 3-3042.

Initial information provided to law enforcement was Sergei MINDHAM was to report to work on March 26th, 2020 but did not show up.

On March 30th, 2020, Johnson County law enforcement was provided with information showing Sergei MINDHAM last used his cell phone on March 26th, 2020 at 7:00 and the GPS coordinates were provided. Representatives from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded the area of the Hunter Corrals and Paradise Guest Ranch. A search of the area was conducted, revealing no sign of MINDHAM or the associated vehicle.


On April 2nd, 2020, representatives from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office along with US Forest Service returned to the area of Keno Creek Trail and Rock Creek to conduct a secondary search. No signs of Sergei MINDHAM were in the area.


On April 7th, 2020, Johnson County law enforcement was contacted by a concerned citizen who advised he had located the vehicle from the missing person report. The citizen advised the vehicle was located on Billy Creek Access Road in the Big Horn Mountains, a location approximately 14.5 air miles from the original coordinates. Representatives from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area and verified the vehicle was in fact the vehicle associated to missing person Sergei MINDHAM. The vehicle was stuck in the snow and no recent human activity was observed in the immediate area.


Johnson County Search and Rescue was notified and dispatched to Billy Creek Access Road in the late afternoon of April 7th, 2020 where a search was activated for Sergei MINDHAM.


On April 8th, 2020, addition resources from Washakie County Search and Rescue, Sheridan County Search and Rescue and private citizen James Purdy (helicopter) arrived in the area to assist with the search. While conducting a ground search of the area, Sergei MINDHAM was found deceased a short distance from his vehicle.
