Cheyenne woman arrested for 1st-degree murder in August 2022 stabbing

UPDATE: Rocsand Bocanegra was seen by Laramie County Circuit Court Judge Antoinette Williams this morning for her initial appearance. It was determined that she will be held without bond. Her preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 23 at 2 pm.


CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Cheyenne woman has been arrested on the suspicion of first-degree murder in an August 2022 stabbing case.

The Laramie County Sheriff’s Office said it arrested Rocsand Bocanegra on Monday, Feb. 13, charging her with the death of Jess Smith on Aug. 8, 2022.

Rocsand Bocanegra, 42, was named a “person of interest” by the department in August 2022 in regard to an investigation into a reported stabbing.

At around 5:26 a.m. Aug. 8, 2022, sheriff’s deputies arrived at the 700 block of Mitchell Court in Cheyenne and found a man suffering from a stab wound. He was then taken to the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center for treatment, the release stated, where he was later pronounced dead. The case is being investigated as a homicide, the department said in the release.

This arrest was made in conjunction with the Laramie County District Attorney’s Office.

Bocanegra is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
