Gertrude “Irene” Miller: 1934 – 2023
Gertrude Irene (Torrens) Bates Miller passed gently away into the embrace of God’s arms on August 13, 2023, in her home surrounded by her family. She was born December 9, 1934 in Wilmore, Kansas to Elmer Marion and Margaret Lucille (Wood) Torrens. She was the oldest of four children: Rich, Patti (Robert) & Davey.
The family moved from Kansas to Sheridan, Wyoming where she attended school and worked on ranches cooking and cleaning. She was an excellent cook, and her children and grandchildren still pride themselves in making her favorite recipes. She enjoyed sewing clothes for her children, crocheting and especially growing flowers.
She met the love of her life, Bobby, while working at Safeway as a grocery checker in Riverton, Wyoming. They’ve been married for 60 years. After leaving Safeway, she started her own cleaning business and cleaned houses and ironed until she turned 80.
Her most shining moment in life was when she became a grandmother or “Gram.” It was during these times she dedicated her life to teaching her grandchildren how to pray and who our Lord and Savior was. She always made sure she was available for after school rides home, homemade Mac and Cheese and heartfelt words in her grandchildren’s times of trouble. She shared her love of country music and singing with them as she hosted many sleepovers out in the country. She was the best storyteller and would read to them every night before they went to bed. She never said goodbye or good night without saying, “I love you and God does too.”
She is survived by her children: Cynthia, Richard, Nancy, Jeanette, Elizabeth, John (Sherri), Stepson Doug; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, to which she was known as, “Aunt Sissy.”
She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; stepson Mickey and recently her daughter-in-law, Carol (Rick); and two sons-in-law, Andy (Cynthia) and Jerry (Nancy).
