JUST ANOTHER GAL FROM CASPER – WHAT I’M LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW EDITION…
This last winter kicked my ass. I mean, I know we live in Wyoming, but three (thousand) feet of snow? Thirty (million) below temps? 65 (gillion) mph winds? By April, I was hanging on by my (still-frozen) fingertips!
I love that now, instead of slogging through mud and ice on my outdoor walks, I’m smelling lilacs and freshly cut grass. The trees are budding, and colorful blooms are popping up all over town. After the worst winter ever, I’ve never been so ready for warm (hot, even!) temps.
Now that we’ve seen some sun (and I’ve ditched my socks and boots in favor of sandals), I’m ready for some Summertime Vibes. And what better way to groove into summer than, well, to groove into summer?
Here are a few “summer” tunes to get you in the fun-in-the-sun mood…
“In the Summertime” – Mungo Jerry
Just a laid-back bit of fun, with a sweet steady beat that’ll get your (hopefully bare or sandal-clad) toes tapping…(Love the song. The “fashion” in the video? Not so much…)
“Summer in New York” – Sofi Tukker
OK, sure, I’ve never been there. But the song’s catchy, and the video makes me wonder what it’d be like to worship the sun in such a legendary setting…
“Summer Nights” – John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John
Wanna get folks to sing along with your summertime tunes? This song from Grease is practically guaranteed to reel ‘em in!
“Summertime Rolls” – Jane’s Addiction
This song is proof that you don’t need drugs to get high…trippy music can get you buzzed as well. This song just feels like lying around in the grass on a bright summer day; the only thing hazy’s your mind…music is the drug, yo. (Thanks for coming to my TED Talk…)
It may not take me back to the summer of ’69, but it does take me back to a few sun-soaked summers in the mid- to late 80s. My friends and I packing up coolers and SPF 2–4, (low SPF NOT recommended; I slather on SPF 30 these days) driving out to the lake and lazing about all day long…
“Summertime Blues” – Alan Jackson
We’ve all been there — all you wanna do is hang with your friends on a perfect summer day, but you can’t, cause you’ve gotta go to work…
“Summertime Thing” – Chuck Prophet
My absolutely favorite summer anthem. Barbeques, long drives, more time spent in/on/around the water (I so crave the water!) — it is, indeed, a summertime thing…
Not everyone loves the chilled, laid-back summer music — Metalheads, this one’s for you! (The older I get, the more I dig Danzig — is that weird?)
“Summer Samba (So Nice)” – Astrud Gilberto, Walter Wanderley
You know who else deserves a summer song? Parents. Grandparents. Great-grandparents! If you enjoy “The Girl from Ipanema” (if you know, you know), you’ll probably like this one, too.
This one’s everyone’s summer anthem. Here’s to summer love that doesn’t end when mother nature cools the air (even if it’s one-sided…).
