CASPER, Wyo. — Natrona County High School is expected to see the construction of an “elevated walkway” connecting the main school building to the Mustang Athletic and Community Center.

The Natrona County School District Board of Trustees approved the negotiation of a contract with an architect to guide the project during their Monday, March 9 board meeting.

Trustee Angela Coleman voted against the recommendation.

The decision authorizes NCSD staff to negotiate a contract with Amundsen Associates for the footbridge project.

“Don’t ask us what it is going to cost us because the negotiation hasn’t occurred yet,” Trustee Clark Jensen said.

He added that the district received only one bid for the project.

“Staff interviewed Amundsen Associates on February 20, 2020, and is confident Amundsen Associates can perform and meet the requirements of the (RFP),” the school district says. “The process being used for this project is the design-bid-build approach.”

The board approved the overall project on Jan. 13. That decision replaced a Sept. 2019 school board vote which rejected the project. Ahead of those discussions, the school district said the footbridge would come with an estimated cost of $770,432, though the exact cost will be determined after the project has gone out to bid.

The district say they have identified a funding source.

“The funding source for this project is existing State Capital Construction dollars,” says NCSD.

The walkway will be about 916 square feet.

“The purpose of the raised walkway is to increase safety and security for students and staff as they move from the main building to the MACC,” the school district says. “Also, this will allow for more effective, efficient, and convenient transition of students and staff to and from the main building and the MACC.”

The school district has provided the following estimated timeline for the project:

  • Phase 1: January 2020 – February 2020
    • Solicit proposals from architects
    • Selection of an architect
    • Design Contract Signed
  • Phase 2: June 2020 – August 2020
    • Architectural design completed
    • Solicit bids from contractors based on design
    • Contractor selection
  • Phase 3: September 2020 – December 2021
    • Construction of raised walkway
