CASPER, Wyo. — An annual volunteer fish stocking event which aims to stock beaver ponds on Pole Mountain has been cancelled due to COVID-19 group size restrictions, according to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

“Each year on Free Fishing Day, volunteers help the Game and Fish Department stock trout in approximately 100 beaver ponds on Pole Mountain,” Game and Fish said on Wednesday, May 27. “The event is popular with the public, often attracting more than 100 volunteers on most years.”

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon’s office announced on Wednesday new public health orders set to go into effect June 1 which will allow outdoor gatherings of up to 250 people.

Game and Fish says that while some events surrounding the annual Free Fishing Day may not occur, Free Fishing Day will still be recognized on June 6.

While the Pole Mountain volunteer event will not be held, Game and Fish will still stock the ponds.

“Fish biologists will still stock 20,000 fingerling brook trout in the ponds in early June. All the help from volunteers in past years is much appreciated and we hope to return to normal and see you all again next year,” said Robin Kepple, information specialist for the Game and Fish Department’s Laramie Region.

Pole Mountain is located north of I-25 between Cheyenne and Laramie in Albany County.
