CASPER, Wyo. — Sun “worshipers,” using that term loosely to refer to anyone who particularly enjoys getting outdoors to bask in the rays emanating from the ball of hot plasma at the center of our solar system, will have plenty of opportunities to celebrate the solstice in Casper this weekend.
The solstice will technically occur at 9:31 pm Sunday, June 20 in Mountain Standard Time but there are a number of solstice related activities over the weekend and on Monday.
That will kick off with a “Mystic Solstice Dance Party” at the downtown coffee shop the Bourgeois Pig starting at 9 pm Friday, June 18. DJ MR!J will be on the turntables. The event is free.
The Wyoming Solstice Celebration will take place from 9 am to 3 pm Saturday at the Clarion Inn with live music and a number of activities from reiki to tarot readings to massage available. The event is $3 or a donation to the Wyoming Food for Thought Project.
After being cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, the Midsummer’s Eve event at Crimson Dawn Park on Casper Mountain will return on Monday, June 21 with the celebration kicking off at 7 pm.
“The evening features the tales of magical characters made famous by Neal Forsling, who began the tradition 92 years ago,” Crimson Dawn Park and Museum says. “The storytelling walk draws hundreds of visitors each year. Participants are advised to wear walking shoes and warm clothes and to bring water, a flashlight, a sense of wonder. Please leave your pets at home. This event is free and open to the public. Donations are greatly appreciated.”
There are also a number of yoga studios in the area offering outdoor classes or outings related to the solstice. WyOMing Yoga & Massage are conducting a “Summer Solstice Hike & Yoga” opportunity from 9-11 am Saturday. People are encouraged to pre-register for the class which will begin at the Nordic Trails center on Casper Mountain.
Theraexpressions are offering an aerial yoga workshop at Crimson Dawn on the mountain starting at 8:30 am. People interested should register ahead of time.
There will also be a Yoga on the Labyrinth class by the river at the Bart Rea Learning Circle in Amoco Park on Saturday. A Qigong class starts at 8:30 am with yoga starting at 9 am. The class is free with people able to donate to their choice of the following non-profit organizations:
- The Table
- The Casper Greenhouse Project
- The Casper Mural Project
- The Good Food Hub
David Street Station is also hosting multiple levels of yoga classes on Saturday starting at 7 am. Yoga at the Station is free and open to the public.
