PHOTOS: Wildfire ‘moving fast’ west of Casper; at over 1,000 acres

UPDATE: The wildfire has forced the closure of US 20/26 between Casper and Moneta, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation. The closure went into effect at 6:27 pm. Parking along the roadway is prohibited. WYDOT says an estimated re-opening time is unknown.

CASPER, Wyo. — A wildfire along US 20/26 in Natrona County near milepost 39 was reported at around 6:08 pm Thursday, according to Casper Interagency Dispatch. What appeared to be smoke from the fire west of town was visible during the evening hours.

The fire has burned approximately 1,000 acres, according to Natrona County Fire District Chief Brian Oliver. He said at around 8:25 pm that the fire was “moving fast through sagebrush and grass.”

Bureau of Land Management Wyoming spokesperson Tyson Finniscum said resources responding to the fire include:

  • two BLM engines
  • a large air tanker
  • two single engine air tankers (SEATs)
  • multiple state and county engines

The cause of the fire is unknown, Finnicum said at around 8:20 pm.
