CASPER, Wyo. — Glenrock High School student Kirsten Nygaard is among 170 high school students across the country selected to attend the National Student Leadership Congress in Washington D.C. this summer, according to a release by the University of Wyoming.

“I believe that the conference will provide me with valuable insights into current and historical American politics,” Nygaard said in the release. “I am eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to meet and collaborate with other TRIO students.”

Upward Bound is one of eight federal TRIO programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

This event is hosted by the Council for Opportunity in Education, a national organization dedicated to increasing access to college for all.

Students will stay on the campus of American University during the six-day program, which will include a mock congress competition, a day on Capitol Hill and several other intensive learning experiences.

UW’s Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math/Science programs help students gain a better understanding of civics and become more engaged citizens, according to program director Felicia Killworth.
