CASPER, Wyo. — The National Weather Service in Riverton has confirmed witness reports of a meteor that streaked through the upper atmosphere of Natrona County around 2:35 a.m. Monday, April 29.

“After checking a couple reports and checking local cameras, we [found] that a meteor did speed through at that time,” the NWS in Riverton said on Facebook. “Rough estimate is that it passed somewhere between Casper and Douglas, moving south to north.”

The Converse County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that it went to investigate a reported “loud boom” around the same time.

Converse County Undersheriff Nathan Hughes said the deputy checked the area northeast of Douglas around East Antelope Road and Highway 59 at 2:45 a.m., but no evidence of an explosion or other phenomenon was observed.

“The sky just lit up; it was a like a transformer blew up, but right in the sky above us,” she said. “It was like it caught fire and went bright orange, then bluish-white. … It was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in my life.”

The NWS in Riverton recommends that meteor reports go to the American Meteor Society.
