CASPER, Wyo. – There seems to be a pattern with the McKinley Street railroad bridge.

In October 2020, the street surrounding the bridge was intermittently closed as crews worked to repair damage after a too-tall freight truck crumpled under the bridge as it attempted to pass.

Flash back four decades and a similar scenario was unfolding.

According to a Casper Star-Tribune clip from Aug. 8, 1980, a Ryder Rental truck met the same fate at the bridge.

Witnesses told the newspaper that the truck “approached the structure and was doing between 30 and 40 mph” when it hit.

“The cargo area, according to one eye-witness, was at least a foot too high for the 11-foot overpass,” said the paper.

Vince Crolla, archivist at the Casper College Western History Museum, saw the recent report of the truck vs. bridge incident and recalled a similar scenario in the Casper Star-Tribune photo archive, now housed at the college.
