CASPER, Wyo. – A sailor who killed two people and seriously wounded another before killing himself reportedly has a Casper connection.

Gabriel Romero, 22, was identified by the U.S. Navy as the sailor who opened fire at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard on December 4.

A source close to the team who asked to remain anonymous confirmed Romero played in Casper before joining the Navy.

Gabriel Romero joined the Casper Coyotes for the 2015/2016 season as a defenseman. According to a story on Juniorhockey.com, he arrived in Casper after playing for the Boston Junior Rangers. The article says Romero was born and raised in Michigan.

The Coyotes folded after their 2017/2018 season.

The Navy Times reports that Romero joined the Navy from Texas on December 11, 2017. He was a Machinist’s Mate Auxiliary Fireman on the Los Angeles-class attack submarine Columbia, which is based in Hawaii and undergoing dry dock repairs there, according to the Navy Times.

The Times reports that Romero “gunned down the three men and then took his own life in the span of only 23 seconds.”
